(*) «The Great Wave of Kanagawa» is the most famous work by Katsushika Hokusai, created between 1830 and 1832. This masterful print depicts a dramatic scene in which a monumental wave, with its foamy crests that seem about to engulf three fishing boats, rises against Mount Fuji, which stands serene on the horizon. Here, the Japanese artist reveals all his creative genius, using the famous Prussian blue, a pigment newly imported from Europe at that time, to create subtle gradations that give the composition its characteristic depth. Hokusai’s exceptional technical mastery is shown in every detail: the bubbly spray of the wave, the dramatic movement of the water, the precision of the boats and their crews, up to the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji standing out against a sky of great serenity.
