Kimbei Kusakabe - Planting Rice & Buck-Wheat Macaroni...

Kimbei Kusakabe, two period albumen prints enhanced with watercolors, circa 1880 : 141. Planting Rice Ethnographic photograph illustrating Japanese peasants transplanting rice in a flooded paddy. The image faithfully conveys the rigor of agricultural work in a Japan still largely rural at the end of the 19th century. The precision of the framing and the subtle colorization make it a valuable testament to agricultural practices of the Meiji era. 154. Buck-Wheat Macaroni Eating Scene of a meal among Japanese women, probably in a teahouse or a semi-private setting. They enjoy buckwheat noodles (soba), a traditional dish of Japanese cuisine, with elegance and in keeping with the decorum codes of the time. Harmonious composition and the hushed atmosphere typical of the Yokohama school. Kusakabe Kimbei (1841-1934) was a colorist and assistant of Felice Beato and Baron Raimond von Stillfried before opening his own workshop in Yokohama in 1881. Around 1885, he bought back the negatives of Beato and Stillfried. Kimbei immortalized, at the end of the 19th century, numerous scenes of Japanese life. The prints, which he hand-colored, were then sold to Western travelers passing through Japan. Condition: Prints mounted on cardboard, recto-verso. See photos for more details. Number of pages: 2 pages Careful shipping in a rigid and watertight carton.
