Kings of Thrace. Lysimachos (323-281 BC). Tetradrachm

Silver tetradrachm by Lysimachus, king of Thrace Obverse (Face): It is the portrait in profile of the deified Alexander the Great. A very important detail is noticed: the horn of Ammon (the ram's horn) curling around his ear. This symbolized his status as the son of Zeus-Ammon. It is one of the finest antique portraits of Alexander. Reverse (Coin reverse): Depicts the goddess Athena seated on a throne to the left. In her right hand she holds a small Nike (the winged goddess of Victory) which crowns the king's name. Her left arm rests on a large shield adorned with a Gorgon's head. The inscription: The vertical inscription can be discerned, meaning "of King Lysimachus".
