Klassieke set Japanse Komainu - Sculpture - Boxwood - Japan

This finely carved and extremely rare pair of sculptures concerns a classic set of Japanese Komainu, in the West also known as Shishi or mythical lion-dogs. These objects are crafted as okimono, which makes them highly suitable as high-quality decorative display figures for a refined Asian interior. In contrast to the more common open-and-closed combination, unique to this specific set is that both lion-dogs are depicted with jaws wide open (double A-gyō form). This rare iconographic variation symbolises within traditional Japanese culture active, doubled spiritual vigilance and maximum protection, with both guardians roaring simultaneously to powerfully ward bad influences and negative energies from the living space. The absolute master quality and authenticity of this set is superbly evidenced by the luxurious signature cartouche on the underside of the belly. The artist's name Matsuyama (松山) is not written on paper or directly into the wood here, but skillfully engraved in a refined inlaid bone placard. This specific inlay technique was during the Meiji period reserved for precious top pieces to eternize the signature of the master carver in an aesthetic way. The sculptures are entirely hand-cut from solid Asian boxwood, in Japan known as tsuge. This wood species is renowned in the antique world for its extreme hardness and exceptionally dense, fine grain, which allowed the carver to shape the fur, the muscular structure and the distinctive spiral curls of the manes with microscopic precision. An additional dimension of liveliness is given to the lion-dogs by the extremely expressive, inlaid eyes of deep black glass, catching light from every angle. This unique pair dates from the sought-after early Shōwa period, a golden era for Japanese craft in which this type of dynamic, crawling animal figures was produced at the very highest level. The pair shows subtle, charming variations in size and mass, underscoring the unique, handmade character of each individual object. One figure measures 6 by 12 by 7.7 centimeters and weighs 160 grams, while its partner is marginally sturdier with dimensions of 6.7 by 12.5 by 7.9 centimeters and a weight of 215 grams. The wood has developed over decades a splendid golden-brown to deep dark-brown patina. The figures are in excellent, characterful antique condition. On the underside of the larger lion there is a fine, natural hairline crack testifying to respectable age and the natural workings of the solid hardwood over the years. In addition, there are minimal, characteristic traces of cured old wax and light superficial wear visible on the soles, underscoring the historical integrity of the pair. This lot constitutes an exceptionally valuable addition for the serious collector of fine woodcarving and Japanese art due to its rare double-open execution and the exclusive inlaid bone signature. Dimensions: 6x12x7.7 cm and 6.7x12.5x7.9 cm Weight: 160 g and 215 g
