Large 8vo, publisher’s cardboard cover illustrated in black and white, black cloth spine, approx. 70 pp., full-page black-and-white photographs. “Terra Magica” series. The bibliography consulted confirms a first edition in 1959, listed as 70/71 pages, in a format of approximately 23 × 18 cm. Reprints followed quickly: 4th edition in 1963, 5th in 1964, 8th in 1968, etc. A charming album of humorous photography, based on a simple principle: capturing, through framing, chance juxtapositions, or the decisive moment, situations in which reality seems to spontaneously produce a visual joke. Hanns Reich’s photographs thus play on resemblances, animal postures, juxtapositions, and accidents of perspective. The double-page spread you’re showing—two manatees whose silhouettes resemble human faces, facing a row of carousel horses—is entirely representative of this style of unusual and playful photography. The book’s success was significant enough to lead to numerous reprints and several sequels: a second volume was published in 1965 and a third in 1969. A fine copy. The cardboard cover is slightly scuffed, with a few small marks and wear at the corners; the black cloth spine is in good condition. The interior appears clean and well-preserved.
