Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kuba peoples. A long raffia textile panel with embroidered and appliquéd geometric designs. It is assembled from rectangular panels of woven raffia palm fiber, sewn end to end. The designs are outlined in dark stem-stitch embroidery and include interlocking lines, chevrons, circles, and diamonds, with small raffia patches appliquéd across the surface. Among the Kuba, men wove the raffia panels and women embroidered them. Long wrapped skirts of this type were worn at dances and ceremonies, displayed wealth and status, and were buried with the dead.
