Patrick Nelson (1916-1963) was born into a conservative Catholic working-class family in Kingston, Jamaica. His father was the celebrated wicket-keeper, Leopold Nelson. Nelson found early work as a valet in Jamaica, before meeting Lord Stanley who invited Nelson to become his valet, at his seat Penrhos, Wales in 1937. After briefly returning to Jamaica and spending time in Bristol, Nelson moved to London in 1938, to study law, where he met Duncan Grant, possibly either at the Shim Sham Club or the Café Royal. Coincidently, Grant’s grandfather, Sir Peter Grant, had been colonial governor in Jamaica in the 1870s. Nelson became Grant’s lover and model and posed for a number of portraits by the artist, the first being completed in August 1938. Nelson also modelled for Edward Wolfe. Grant and Nelson remained close, corresponding regularly throughout their lives and there are a number of letters from the sitter to the artist preserved in the Tate, London. In 1940, Nelson joined the Auxiliary Military Pioneer Corps and was posted to France as part of the British Expeditionary Forces. He was wounded and captured by the Germans in May 1940. He spent the rest of the war as a prisoner of war. Whilst a prisoner, Grant who was designated Nelson’s next of kin, sent him parcels and law books, through the Red Cross. On his release, Nelson returned to Jamaica, where he remained until he decided to revisit London in about 1960 and the present painting was painted sometime after Nelson’s return and his death, from a heart attack, in 1963. Grant has captured his friend, at ease, with his hands folded, elegantly dressed, with an Omega Workshop scarf draped across him.
