λ Property from the Private Collection of Raymond Tooth EUAN UGLOW (BRITISH 1932-2000) FIGURES IN A PARK Oil on board 25 x 30cm (9¾ x 11¾in.) Provenance: Private Collection, USA Sale, Christie's, London, 8 June 2001, lot 153 Literature: Uglow’s work embodies a heroic grappling between the eyes and its chosen subjects in conditions of the artist’s own devising, where a massive stillness speaks of concentration and where the passage of time is recorded in accumulated colour, drawn and redrawn lines, and patiently negotiated surfaces. (Richard Kendall, ‘Uglow at work: the formative years’ in Uglow the complete Paintings, p. ix). Uglow made several loosely brushed outdoor figure studies throughout his career. Many of these were ‘retinal’ images – images that had remained in his memory, rather than painting from life.
