LA FONTAINE (Jean de). Poem on the Captivity of Saint Malc. Paris, Claude Barbin, 1673. In-12, red morocco leather, Jansenist, interior lace, gilt edges (Trautz-Bauzonnet). First edition, very rare. It is said that La Fontaine was forced to destroy this edition because of an error in his dedicatory epistle, in which he had referred to Cardinal de Bouillon as “His Most Serene Highness” instead of “His Most Eminent Highness.” In this copy, the epithet that caused him trouble has been crossed out and replaced in pen by an earlier hand with the title “most eminent.” Two other handwritten corrections are also noted (pp. 24 and 39). An old handwritten bookplate on an added endpaper: “Belonged to the young lady of Verteuil.” A fine copy.
