Lady Herbert / Eugène Mathieu - L'Algérie contemporaine illustrée - 1890

A superb illustrated edition of this work, which sits within the tradition of nineteenth-century narratives and illustrated albums devoted to Algeria— It offers a contemporary view of colonial Algeria, mixing descriptions of landscapes, cities and populations with iconography meant to appeal to the European reader— The text and images seek to offer a picturesque and exotic representation, while reflecting the ideologies of the time, marked by ethnographic curiosity and the implicit justification of the colonial enterprise— Lady Herbert / Eugène Mathieu - L’Algérie contemporaine illustrée - SD (Circa 1890) - Victor Palmé - 559 pages. Good condition of the binding, the work in its full red illustrated edition cartonage, light signs of wear, some minor defects on the cover, a snag to one hinge, worn corners, gilded edges, smooth spine nicely ornamented, gilded titling and ornaments, covers adorned with black and gold motifs— Good inside condition, some foxing (more pronounced on certain leaves), the work enriched with beautiful color and black engravings hors texte, ink annotations, modern endpapers in good condition, a pleasant copy— Delivery service guaranteed within a few days –
