LANDOLT (Hanspeter). German Painting: The Late Middle Ages (1350–1500). Geneva, Skira, n.d. Large 4to, publisher’s binding with illustrated dust jacket, slipcase. A major study devoted to Germanic painting of the late Middle Ages, covering the period 1350–1500. Hanspeter Landolt examines the various artistic centers of the Germanic world and their development, notably Bohemia, the Upper Rhine, and the Swabian and Swiss regions. The book reproduces and analyzes numerous major works, including those by Konrad Witz, the Master of the Garden of Paradise, and the Bohemian masters. The study particularly highlights the interplay between courtly art, the international Gothic tradition, and the gradual development of a new realism in the 15th century. Richly illustrated, including numerous color reproductions, often full-page. A fine copy with its original dust jacket and slipcase; the slipcase shows some soiling and signs of wear.
