Last edition published during the author's lifetime of this important work relating to celestial mechanics and the solar system. The author, the Marquis Pierre Simon Laplace (1749-1827), was a famous mathematician and astronomer. Marquis Pierre-Simon de Laplace, Exposition du systeme du Monde. Cinquième édition, revue et augmentée par l'auteur, Paris, Bachelier Librairie, January 1824. PP.: VIII, 418, (II). COMPLETE, with a portrait frontispiece. Copy with plates in overall good/very good condition, with the usual signs of use and time. Sparse foxing. Contemporary half-leather binding with gilt title on the spine, with some wear but solid and well preserved overall. White endpapers. Prestigious provenance: it bears the ex-libris label of the private library, now extinct, of Severino Grattoni (1815–1876), Italian architect, engineer and politician, famous for having designed and directed the works for the construction of the Frejus rail tunnel, over 12 km long between France and Italy, the first large-diameter gallery in a mountain.
