large ammonite with a carved mouth

Very important fossil group from the Devonian-Cretaceous period. Totally extinct by the end of the Cretaceous, it is thought to derive from ancestors belonging to Nautiloidea. Although part of the cephalopod mollusk group, the ammonite is especially distinguished by the shape of the shell, characterized by bilateral symmetry. The shell is divided into a front indivisible region where the animal resided and a rear region divided into chambers. The line of closure between the chambers is very indicative and facilitates the recognition of the species. Moreover its outline, in the early forms rather simple and linear, gradually evolved into the most recent ammonites where it is often very jagged and almost baroque. Sizes vary: they range from a few cm but can reach up to 10 cm. Since this is a completely extinct marine species, we can only hypothesize their lifestyle. It is believed that the forms with smooth, externally unornamented shells were swimmers, often predators. Species with more ribbed and ornate shells were predominantly benthic. A very beautiful lot, the workmanship of the mouth/aperture makes this object particularly exhibitable. Indeed the shaping, polishing, and carving of the mouth show beautifully the natural crystallization processes of calcite. The beautiful red reflections of this ammonite with worked mouth, its size, make it an exceptional lot. If exposed to a beam of light, the ammonite will reveal a very special play of light to the eye. It is impossible not to be astonished by so much beauty. Pedestal not included. Happy bidding.
