Large Antique Serapi Carpet, Northwest Persia, circa 1880 - 12 ft

Curated collection of antique, vintage and modern rugs Large Antique Serapi Carpet, Northwest Persia, circa 1880 Size: 12 ft 3 in x 9 ft (3.73 m x 2.74 m) A powerful room-size Serapi carpet combining monumental geometric drawing with the warmth and individuality of village weaving. The broad proportions and visually assertive composition give the carpet a strong architectural presence, while the irregularities of hand drawing preserve the personality of the individual weaver. The best Serapi carpets remain among the most adaptable nineteenth-century Persian weavings: sufficiently bold for a contemporary interior, yet deeply rooted in the historic carpet traditions of northwest Persia. Its desirable dimensions make this an especially usable example. Condition Request Condition Report Lot # 402 Serapi Carpet — A handsome Serapi carpet with an attractive age-softened patina and strong decorative character. The side selvages are intact and in good order. The pile across the field is generally low but even, with no major localized condition issues noted. Both ends have been reconstructed and constitute the principal restoration to the carpet. Despite the reduced pile height, the carpet presents well overall and retains the appealing surface and character associated with age.
