Eastern Roman Empire, Byzantine Period, ca. 5th–7th century AD. A massive Byzantine circular table top carved from a substantial single piece of fine-grained, pale cream-coloured marble, displaying an elegant arrangement of concentric mouldings. The broad, flat central surface is slightly recessed and enclosed by a raised circular border, followed by a series of finely carved concentric ridges and shallow grooves extending towards the wide outer rim. The carefully proportioned architectural mouldings create a harmonious geometric composition, characteristic of late antique and early Byzantine marble furnishings. The substantial dimensions and considerable thickness of the stone suggest a prestigious furnishing, possibly intended for an ecclesiastical, ceremonial, or high-status domestic setting. The surface retains its original polished appearance, with visible natural veining, age-related wear, and several ancient-looking fractures extending across the central field and outer rim. An impressive example of Byzantine marble craftsmanship, distinguished by its monumental proportions, restrained decoration, and refined execution Size: 1230mm x 1240mm; Weight: 50+kg Provenance: Private UK collection, since 1980s. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
