Large Polished Sumatran Amber Freeform with Spectacular...

Rare fossil resin that reveals a vibrant electric blue under UV light — This lot features a remarkably large specimen of Blue Amber from the island of Sumatra, in Indonesia. It is not ordinary amber; rather, a rare fossil resin that hides a spectacular optical secret. Worked in a freeform shape and carefully polished, this piece transforms from an enigmatic dark gem into a blue light beacon under ultraviolet exposure, representing a magnificent example of how nature can conceal unexpected wonders. In natural light, the specimen presents with an almost austere appearance. Its surface, mirror-polished, enhances a deep hue that ranges from dark cognac to almost black, typical of Sumatra amber. The organic form, not constrained by rigid geometry, follows the natural lines of the original resin flow, preserving in some sections depressions and textures that attest to its raw origin before polishing. These areas create a fascinating tactile and visual contrast with the glossy surfaces, telling the geological story of the specimen. The true magic of this piece unfolds when illuminated by a UV lamp. The dark, seemingly inert mass lights up with electric blue, vibrant and deep. This phenomenon, known as fluorescence, is caused by aromatic hydrocarbons present in the resin’s chemical composition, which absorb UV light at short wavelengths and re-emit it at a visible blue wavelength. The intensity and tone of this color make Sumatra Blue Amber one of the most sought-after in the world. In photographs, reddish hues at the edges are also noticeable, a further chromatic peculiarity that adds complexity and charm to the specimen. Sumatra Amber has a geologic origin relatively recent compared to other famous ambers, such as Baltic amber. It formed in the Miocene, about 20-23 million years ago, from the resin of trees in the legume family, presumably genus Hymenaea. These ancient Indonesian tropical forests produced enormous amounts of resin that, once buried under sediment layers and subjected to pressure and heat, underwent a fossilization process known as polymerization, transforming into the organic gem we admire today. For its rarity and the incredible optical phenomenon that characterizes it, Blue Amber is an indispensable piece for any mineral or natural history collector. An object of Wunderkammer excellence, this specimen combines the fascination of a fossil, the beauty of a natural sculpture, and the surprise of a physical phenomenon. Its generous size makes it a focal point with great visual impact, ideal for display in a study, a library, or a gallery, where it can be admired both in its sober ambient-light form and in its spectacular fluorescent state. Technical details Name: Sumatra Blue Amber Classification: Fossil resin Provenance: Sumatra, Indonesia Geologic period: Miocene (about 20-23 million years ago) Dimensions: 150 x 92 x 85 mm Weight: 602 g Conditions: Natural polished specimen.
