Large Shell Cameo of Flora in Filigree Gold, ca. 1925

This shell cameo of the 1920s shows a figure of classical mythology. The Roman heaven of the gods of antiquity knew many deities, for every conceivable concern and with the most diverse responsibilities. The goddess Flora, young, beautiful, graceful, was the goddess of spring, and flowers. Artists portrayed Flora as similar to a Greek spring goddess, as a graceful maiden adorned with flowers - and this is exactly the form in which we encounter her in this cameo. Flora is shown in profile with flowers in her hair. She wears a gown of gossamer fabric, on which flowers are also set. Held by an elaborate openwork setting of light yellow gold, probably made in the USA, the cameo, probably cut in Italy, can be worn as a pendant and a brooch.
