Large vintage brooch with amethysts & diamonds in gold, circa 1980

This brooch is impressively large and enchantingly romantic at the same time. Two hearts are cut from deep purple amethyst, a third amethyst is emerald-cut. It forms the center of the design, with the two hearts pointing to the right and left like glowing arrows. Sparkling diamonds accompany the amethysts, all gemstones are set in high-carat gold. It is interesting to note that the brooch changes its message depending on how it is worn: We can once see two hearts pointing to the right and left like arrows; the brooch thus looks like a classic collar brooch of the late 19th century, in its perfect symmetry, although it is also much larger than brooches in the years around 1900 ever were. If the brooch is worn vertically, however, the arrows become the playing card symbol of spades: The amethyst head now rests on a diamond stem. So is it a brooch for gamblers - or does it simply promise luck in the game - and in love? Pieces of jewellery with hearts made of precious stones were a great fashion in the 18th century, which experienced a renaissance in the late 19th century. This brooch is a late child of this fashion. The cut of the stones, the design and its workmanship in heavy, high-carat gold reveal that it was created around 1980. We discovered it in Stuttgart.
