LATE BRONZE AGE SWORD WITH EAR-SHAPED POMMEL

Ca. 1200 - 900 BC. A cast bronze sword with an elongated, double-edged blade divided by a pronounced median rib. Its rounded shoulders form a crescentic guard from which rises a narrow grip decorated with closely spaced chevron or herringbone bands. The apparently conical terminal represents an ear-shaped pommel viewed along its narrower axis. The combination of a crescentic guard, textured grip, and eared pommel is characteristic of highland weapon types spanning the end of the second and beginning of the first millennium BC. The surface bears dark-green oxidation and lighter mineral accretions. Size: 560mm x 70mm; Weight: 880g Provenance: Private London collection; previously acquired on the German art market during the 1980s. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
