Late Roman/Early Byzantine Bronze Byzantine Bronze...

Byzantine Bronze Reliquary Cross with Virgin Orans & Mysterious Greek Inscription Middle Byzantine Period, circa 10th–12th century AD 24.1 g. and 67.8 × 46.9 mm From a Private European Collection. A fascinating and highly attractive Byzantine bronze reliquary cross half (enkolpion), remarkable for its large size, exceptionally rich engraved decoration and enigmatic inscription MIHHP. The front depicts a female sacred figure standing frontally with both arms raised in the ancient Orans attitude of prayer, most plausibly representing the Virgin Mary (Theotokos). Her garments are extensively decorated with finely engraved chevrons, geometric patterns and wavy ornamentation, creating an unusually elaborate composition. Of particular interest is the inscription MIHHP prominently engraved above the figure: Its precise interpretation remains uncertain. The inscription is nevertheless strongly reminiscent of the Marian designation ΜΗΤΗΡ (Mētēr – “Mother”), encountered in Byzantine representations of the Mother of God. Irregular and corrupted inscriptions are known from Byzantine devotional objects, particularly where established iconographic formulas were reproduced by individual or provincial craftsmen. The inscription should therefore be preserved exactly as it appears – MIHHP – rather than silently corrected, making it one of the most intriguing features of the object. The deeply recessed reverse reveals the original purpose of the object. This was not simply a decorative cross, but one half of a Byzantine pectoral reliquary – an enkolpion. Originally closed by a corresponding second half, the cross formed a small sacred chamber in which a relic or other devotional material could be carried. Approximately a thousand years ago, its owner could therefore have worn this cross directly upon the chest – the praying image of the Virgin visible outside, while a sacred relic was protected within. Such objects formed an intensely personal connection between their owners and the sacred world of Byzantine Christianity. They accompanied their wearers through everyday life, travel and moments of uncertainty, serving simultaneously as reliquary, devotional image and profession of faith. The combination of its large dimensions, remarkably extensive engraving, unusual MIHHP inscription, Marian Orans iconography and surviving reliquary construction gives this piece considerable historical character. A very rare and exceptionally evocative example of Byzantine personal devotion. Highly collectible.
