Late Roman/Early Byzantine Ceramic A large, heavy Roman vessel. - 18 cm

Roman Empire – Late Roman, massive, two-handled ceramic pot – approx. 3rd–5th century AD – 18 cm – 1,839 kg Very interesting and unusually massive ancient ceramic vessel made of gray to dark gray, coarsely tempered ware. The vessel has a stout, bulging body, a broad base, and a markedly outward-turned rim. Especially characteristic are the two exactly opposite attachment points of the originally present handles. Both handles are no longer present today, but their original position is clearly recognizable. The surface shows numerous authentic manufacturing and use marks. Inside, circular turning or smoothing marks are visible. The thick sherd contains clearly visible mineral inclusions and exhibits an overall gray, presumably reduction-fired surface. Typologically, the vessel can be well placed in the range of Roman to late Roman everyday ceramics. Comparable two-handled vessel forms are known from the Rhineland, Lower Germania, as well as from the nordic Gallian and adjacent Roman provincial areas. Particularly in the 4th century AD, similar robust double-handle vessels occur. Based on shape, production technique, and ware type, a dating to the late Roman period, roughly 3rd–5th century AD, is plausible. Dimensions: Height: ca. 18 cm Mouth diameter: ca. 21 cm Base diameter: ca. 15 cm Weight: 1,839 g Condition: Ancient preservation state with age-related deposits, signs of use, and minor damage. Both handles are missing. The opposite handle mounts are clearly preserved. Surface and sherds show authentic ancient aging. No restoration! A decorative and at the same time archaeologically interesting example of Roman everyday ceramics with exceptionally strong walls and high intrinsic weight. Dating: approx. 3rd–5th century AD Culture: Roman Empire Region: probably Rhineland / Lower Germania / nord-gallic area Material: Ceramic / coarse gray clay ware.
