LATE ROMAN MOSAIC PANEL WITH TWO FISHES

LATE ROMAN MOSAIC PANEL WITH TWO FISHES

Ca. AD 300 - 500. A rectangular mosaic panel depicting two fish engaged in a predatory scene, with a larger fish shown in profile swallowing a smaller one. The principal fish is represented with an elongated body, prominent dorsal fin and extended tail, its anatomical features carefully delineated in dark tesserae. The smaller fish is partially enclosed within the open jaws of the predator, creating a dynamic composition. The figures are rendered in shades of reddish-brown, ochre, cream and black, with contrasting outlines emphasising their forms. The scene is set against a uniform background of small beige and ochre tesserae.
