All auctions / Porcelain & Pottery / le secret du galion - Jörg Möhme - Coffee service (20) - Porcelain

Exceptional and extremely rare complete fine porcelain service from the iconic “So French” collection, released in the 1990s by Décor du Galion. This highly recognizable model features a vibrant, graphic motif with interlocking faces, directly influenced by the postmodern Memphis Milano movement, Pop Art, and Cubism. A fascinating legal backstory (Object "Forbidden"): This service has an extraordinary history that makes it a true museum piece for design enthusiasts. The motif of stylized faces and profiles is an unauthorized reproduction of an original work (inspired by African themes) created by the German painter and screen printer Jörg Möhme. Shortly after its market launch, production and commercialization of this dinnerware were permanently halted and banned by the courts. The publisher was convicted of intellectual property infringement and counterfeiting following the lawsuit brought by Jörg Möhme (see photos). With the vast majority of the stock seized and destroyed by court decision, the very few complete surviving pieces are today regarded as absolute rarities. The resale of this vintage piece between private individuals is completely legal and represents a unique opportunity for a collector. Contents of the lot: • 1 Stacking teapot/coffee pot with postmodern design (it nests neatly over its large low cup dedicated to it). • 6 Coffee/espresso cups with an asymmetrical geometric profile. • 6 Matching triangular saucers. • The original round presentation box in perfect condition, complete with its white satin lining and its lid bearing the famous humorous inscription silkscreened: “Un ou deux sucres ? Ceci est un trésor du Galion.” State: ABSOLUTE MINT CONDITION (New Old Stock). The service has never been used. It has been kept in its original box since manufacture. The colors of the illustration are factory-fresh with sparkling brightness, and the fine gold gilding on the handles and the edges of the porcelain is impeccable, with no wear or rubbing. Official publisher mark “So French” Décor du Galion present on the base of all pieces. Rare Complete "So French" Porcelain Set – Décor du Galion – Postmodern & Pop Art Design – Original Presentation Box – MINT CONDITION / NEVER USED – Collector's Item (Artist: Jörg Möhme) Description: Exceptional and extremely rare complete fine porcelain set from the iconic "So French" collection, released in the 1990s by Décor du Galion. This highly recognizable model features a vibrant, graphic design with interlocking abstract faces, deeply influenced by the Postmodern Memphis Milano movement, Pop Art, and Cubism. A Fascinating Legal Backstory ("Banned" Collection): This set carries an extraordinary history, making it a true conversation piece for design enthusiasts. The graphic pattern of stylized profiles was directly copied without permission from an original series of African-inspired paintings and serigraphs by the German contemporary artist Jörg Möhme. Shortly after its commercial launch, its production was permanently halted and legally banned from the market. The manufacturer was convicted of copyright infringement following a landmark lawsuit won by Jörg Möhme to protect his intellectual property (photos). Since the vast majority of the factory stock was seized and destroyed at the time, the very few surviving complete sets are now considered highly coveted rarities. Selling this vintage piece as a private owner is completely legal and represents a unique opportunity for late-20th-century design collectors to own a true piece of design-law history. Lot Details: • 1 Modular, stackable teapot/coffee pot with an ergonomic design (nesting perfectly over a matching wide base cup). • 6 Geometric, asymmetrical coffee/espresso cups. • 6 Matching triangular saucers. • The original round presentation box in beautiful condition, complete with its original white satin lining and the famous screen-printed cover reading: “Un ou deux sucres ? Ceci est un trésor du Galion.” (One or two sugars? This is a treasure of the Galion). Condition: ABSOLUTE MINT CONDITION (New Old Stock). This set has never been used. It has been safely stored in its original box since its manufacture. The colors of the artwork are factory-fresh and incredibly bright, and the fine gold gilding on the handles and porcelain rims is pristine, without any rubbing or signs of wear. Officially hallmarked "So French" Décor du Galion on the base.
