Leavenworth City, Territory of Kansas. City Bank. 1856 $1. PMG Very Fine 20. Remainder. No. None. Plate A. A tough note from a tough bank. This $1 Obsolete issued by the City Bank of Leavenworth City is a particularly fine example of Ormsby's visual distinctiveness translated into engraved form. Here a singular vignette of a farmhand accounts for the focus of the design while a pair of large rounded counters emblazoned "1" and "ONE" may be seen at left and right. Notably this exact same design is "doubled" on the $2s issued by this bank as the primary vignette is repeated twice while the number of counters is doubled lending the notes on this bank that organized in 1856 a distinctive visual cadence that effectively overshadows the fact that the Panic of 1857 quickly signaled the death knell for this institution. Estimate: $300 - $500. Provenance: From the Caine Collection.
