Leavenworth City, Territory of Kansas. Drovers Bank. 1856 $2. PMG Choice Very Fine 35. No. 10337. Plate A. Representative of a well-documented "wildcat bank" that remains popular with collectors. Per Steven Whitfield in Kansas Obsolete Notes and Scrip "The Drovers Bank" was an operation that likely printed its notes before opening and whose notes trickled out into circulation where they deceived and defrauded holders. This institution is also well-known for notes that carried a Utah-based imprint that were in theory redeemable in Salt Lake City. Regardless of the exact circumstances behind the conception of this fraudulent institution, surviving notes are coveted by collectors owing to their expansive and detailed vignettes. To that end, bidders should expect this moderately circulated $2 to attract its share of interest from those who specialize in popular vignettes and attractive designs. Estimate: $300 - $500. Provenance: From the Caine Collection.
