History of Legras glassmaking: François Théodore Legras practiced all glass techniques and was a great admirer of Emile Gallé, whom he tried to imitate in artistic pieces. Legras’s artistic creations are not always signed, but their shape often allows them to be recognized. François-Théodore Legras entered the glassmaking trade near his native village as an office clerk. That is where he learned his craft. At 24, he left his Vosges homeland to work at the La Plaine Saint-Denis glassworks, a district of Saint-Denis near Paris, where he was hired as a clerical worker. Six months later he became production manager and, in 1866, at the age of 27, he became director of the glassworks. He then built a new modern factory and a workers’ park which, over the years, became an industrial complex of nearly 20,000 square meters. He became CEO of Legras et Cie, then of Verrerie et Cristallerie de Saint-Denis. He participated in numerous national and international exhibitions, where he typically won prizes. He was also responsible for the glass and crystal section of the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris. In 1909, he ceded the leadership of his company to his nephew Charles Legras. From 1914, production changed in style and drew on Art Deco, with a return to simple lines and a certain sobriety. Legras production continued until 1928.
