The work shows the absolutely iconic central motif of her oeuvre: the so-called "Floating Face" (floating face). Rendered in delicate, blazing tones of orange, red and yellow, the floating girl’s face with closed eyes radiates a deep, meditative calm—masterfully balancing at the interface between traditional Japanese reduction and Western modernity. Leiko Ikemura (born 1951 in Tsu, Japan) is one of the most internationally renowned contemporary artists. The Japanese-Swiss painter and sculptor moved to Europe in the 1970s and held a prestigious professorship for painting at the University of the Arts (UdK) Berlin from 1996 to 2015. Ikemura's work moves in a unique way at the intersection of Eastern philosophy and Western modernity. Her central and globally known motif is the "Floating Face" – floating, often melancholic girls’ faces with closed eyes. These works capture the fleeting transition between dream and reality, becoming and passing, and radiate a deep, meditative calm. Her works are represented worldwide in major collections, including the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
