First French edition of the rare and sought-after biography of the mysterious arms dealer and Greek banker Basil Zaharoff (1849-1936), enriched by a rare original typed business letter hand-signed by Zaharoff himself. Richard Lewinsohn, Zaharoff. L'Européen mystérieux, Paris, Payot, 1929. PP. 189, (III). COMPLETE, with 16 plates out of text. Copy with leaves in overall very good condition. The original publisher's wrapper and the spine are preserved inside. Also present is an old newspaper article about Zaharoff. Fine and refined contemporaneous binding in half red garnet leather with corners. Marbleized endpapers. Gilded top edge. The spine is finely decorated with gilded friezes and compartments, with the binder's name "Bellanger" impressed in gold at the foot.
