Pair of porcelain tea canisters with lids in the Meissen/Dresden style – 19th century (Paris / Edmé Samson ?) Description A particularly handsome and decorative pair of rectangular porcelain tea canisters (boîtes à thé) with accompanying lids, made in the second half of the 19th century in the 18th-century manner. The tea canisters are flask-shaped with rounded corners and a curved shoulder. Each side features refined, hand-painted decor: Front: A romantic, gallant scene of a loving couple in a landscape (inspired by Jean-Antoine Watteau and François Boucher). Sides and back: Richly painted with multicolored floral bouquets and loose scattering blossoms. Gilding: The scenes and corners are framed in exuberant rocaille cartouches with fretwork and tendrils in gold. The base bears the well-known blue underglaze monogram with entwined L’en, the year letter 'A' and painter's mark 'c' – a faithful 19th-century interpretation of the early Sèvres/Vincennes mark from 1753. Specifications Type: Tea canisters / small tea jars with lid (pair) Material: Hand-painted porcelain, enamel and gold Origin: France (Paris, attributed to Edmé Samson or contemporary) Period: 19th century (c. 1870–1900) Height: approx. 11.5 cm (including lid) Marks: Reproduced Sèvres/Vincennes blue monogram on both bases Condition report The tea canisters have been carefully inspected and are in good overall condition with the following notes: Body / tea canisters: Both canisters are intact; no cracks, fractures or restorations. Very light, age-appropriate wear to the gilding (including along the neck edge). Lid 1: In good condition. Lid 2 (damage): The hand-modeled rose knob on top of the lid is damaged; the upper petals are broken/missing (clearly visible in photos IMG_9585 and IMG_9586). On the interior of the same lid there is also a fine hairline crack in the porcelain (see photo IMG_9584). Please view the photos carefully for a complete and accurate impression of the condition; they are an integral part of the description.
