Rare Hand-Carved Agate Coral Nettle-Patterned Vase with Lid - Handles with Movable Rings - China, 20th Century - With Base - Pristine Conditions Lotto Description: Elegant and refined vase with lid in natural corniola (agatized) agate, a superb example of Chinese lapidary art from the first half of the 20th century. The body of the piece is finely hand-carved, taking advantage of the gem’s natural warm amber and red-orange hues to create a fascinating play of light and translucencies. The vase stands out for the extraordinary executional complexity of the stylized handles (inspired by mythological figures), from which hang two movable rings ('captive rings'), entirely relief-carved from a single block of stone with no joints or welds. The central body is embellished with fluid relief decorations echoing traditional phytomorphic motifs. The piece rests on its original solid hardwood base, custom-carved to suit, which elongates its silhouette and ensures stability.
