Characteristics of this object • Function: For many of these figures the head is a detachable stopper. Underneath there is a hidden glass or metal bottle (a so-called Schnapsflasche), or the figurine houses a mechanism such as a built-in lighter or music box. • Origin: This type of woodcarving falls under European folk art and is typical of the Alpine regions, such as South Tyrol (Italy) or Austria. Well-known workshops that produced such distinctive, humorous figures include the Italian ANRI. • Dating: Most of these wooden cellar masters and monks were made in the second half of the 20th century (approx. the 1950s to the 1970s).
