The royal chain pattern, also known as king chain or Byzantine chain, is an intricately crafted chain pattern characterized by its dense, sculptural and symmetrical structure. It is one of the more technically demanding types of braiding and is mainly used for high-quality necklaces and bracelets. The construction is based on a complex, precisely defined arrangement of individual round eyelets, which are not linear but intertwined several times. The term "Byzantine" refers to historical artisanal braiding techniques, whereby today's pattern is considered a modern interpretation of this tradition and was particularly widespread in European and American goldsmiths in the 20th century. In German-speaking countries, the term "Königskette" (royal necklace) has become established, which is presumably due to the opulent and prestigious effect of the pattern. This necklace from the last years of the 20th century shows this decorative pattern. The chain is made from 14-karat rose gold and is approximately 132 cm long. This means it can also be worn looped several times. We discovered this beautiful piece here in Berlin.
