Louis Haché (1922-2013) - Deux paysages sous ciel noir

This pair of two works by Louis Haché (1922-2013), executed in acrylic on panel, brings together two landscapes treated in a shared search for formal simplification and contrast. Born in Ixelles, Haché initially pursued a career as a draftsman, illustrator and comic book author before gradually dedicating himself to painting. This graphic training remains perceptible in the clarity of the outlines, the rigorous construction of the compositions, and the legibility of the different planes. The first painting depicts a vast rural landscape, composed of open fields, a few scattered buildings and hills that structure the horizon. A clear road cuts through the scene and leads the eye toward the distance. The composition is dominated by wide expanses of greens and earthy tones, topped by a sky that is almost entirely black. This particularly stark contrast gives the scene a silent, slightly unreal atmosphere. The second work, by contrast, presents a built environment: a street lined with houses with light-colored façades, seen under the same dark sky. The architectures are rendered with simple geometric volumes and carefully delineated blocks of color. A few brighter touches—yellow, blue, red or pink—punctuate the façades and animate a scene otherwise devoid of human figures. The curve of the roadway guides the gaze toward the center of the composition and accentuates depth. Despite the difference between the rural landscape of the first painting and the urban space of the second, the two works share a strong stylistic unity. Haché contrasts vast luminous surfaces with dark, deep skies, creating a tension between the precise descriptive rendering of places and a more enigmatic atmosphere. The absence of characters further reinforces this impression of suspended calm. Together they thus attest to a pictorial approach in which reality is progressively pared down in favor of simple forms, highly legible perspectives, and assertive chromatic contrasts. These two landscapes appear less as strictly documentary restitutions than as silent visions of familiar places, to which Haché confers a singular presence through the geometry of the composition and the strangeness of the light.
