Letter signed by Louis-Joseph de Vendôme, Duke of Vendôme, general of the armies of Louis XIV, accompanied by three manuscripts from the papers of Jean Gabet, his agent in Provence. The set is dated 1676 to 1692. Written in brown ink on laid watermarked paper. 1. Letter signed “Louis de Vendosme,” dated at Anet, January 26, 1682, 1 page. In this letter addressed to Mr. Gabet, Louis-Joseph de Vendôme orders five to six hundred fir trees to be delivered to Lyon, accepts an offer to have as many brought from the mountains of Dauphiné and regulates the reimbursement of expenses. Contemporary note on the back. 2. Letter signed by “Tellier,” the duke’s steward, dated in Paris, October 14, 1676, 2 pages, with address “Monsieur Gabet agent de Mgrs de Vendosme en Provence, à Aix” and a red wax seal. The signatory transmits the annual order of Provencal provisions intended for His Serene Highness (wine, rossolis, tuna, oil, anchovies, poutargue, pomade and essences) and sets the payment terms. 3. Letter signed by a Lyon correspondent, dated March 4, 1685, 1 page, addressed to Mr. Gabet, King’s Counselor, in Aix. The signatory reports the seizure at Lyon customs of a bale of tuna from Provence, the duties paid to the Lyon and Valence customs, and its shipment to the controller of the Duke of Vendôme’s household. Account note on the back. 4. Contemporary copy of a summons issued in Paris on January 11, 1692, signed by the bailiff, 3 pages on stamped paper. The document contains the statement of sums advanced from 1672 to 1685 by Jean Gabet for the purchase of mules, wines and provisions, followed by the summons of the Duke of Vendôme before the Provost of Paris for payment of 12,911 livres. Dimensions: from 18.8 x 20.4 cm to 18.8 x 25.9 cm Condition: Good overall for documents of this period. Presence of folds, foxing and stains on the whole. See photos for more details. Number of documents: 4 documents Careful shipping in rigid and waterproof packaging. - Louis-Joseph de Bourbon, Duke of Vendôme, known as the Grand Vendôme, was born at the Hôtel de Vendôme in Paris on 1 July 1654 and died in the town of Vinaròs on 11 June 1712.
