Oval enamelled in translucent blue and green, and opaque white, with geometric and foliate motifs framing on the cover a mythological scene painted in grisaille after Hubert François Gravelot (1699 - 1773) from Voltaire's Tancrede, act III, scene 6, the sides chased with musical trophies repeated on the underside; later engraved in cover with inscription ' Donné par sa Majesté Napoléon III Empereur des Français, St Cloud Septembre 23rd 1855' , marked in cover, base and side: charge, date-letter (D) and maker; on flange with décharge; stamped inside with workshop number 1565 Size/Dimensions: 8.4 cm. (3 3⁄8 in.) long Gross weight : 187 gr. (6 oz.)
