Luis Soriano Quirós (1932-2001) - Basilique du Sacré-Coeur, Paris

Oil on canvas, 51 x 40.5 cm. Signed in the bottom right corner. The framing is not included in the sale, but it is sent as a gift. Luis Soriano Quirós (Granada, 1932 – Bilbao, 2001), pupil of the School of Fine Arts and Trades of Granada, with master Don Joaquín Capulino. With a group of six painters and a sculptor he founded the artistic group Los Iliberitanos de Granada, which aims to go beyond its surroundings, make itself known, and lead its painting toward constant renewal without renouncing the values of traditional painting or the classical concept of form and color. Around 1956 he obtained, through a competition, a painting scholarship from the City Council of Granada, which allowed him to move to Barcelona to broaden his studies. Here he worked mainly on landscapes and figures — popular types treated with a clean brushstroke — as well as a large number of portraits in which he sought not only physical likeness but also to delve into the psychology of the portrayed. In this period he made his first trip to Paris. Around 1958, on the occasion of an exhibition, he visited Bilbao, where the landscape, the traditions and the people, as well as Basque painting, impressed him. He decided to establish his residence there, alternating it with vacation stays in Granada. He was named Corresponding Academician of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Granada in 1982. He has held numerous exhibitions both collective and solo, the latter in Barcelona, Granada, Bilbao, Vitoria, Málaga, Marbella, Alicante, Santander, Madrid, Pamplona, Bayonne (France), Valencia and Seville, among other cities. His work is housed in the Museo de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Granada, the Ayuntamiento de Granada, the Caja General de Ahorros de Granada and the Museo A. Marsá of Barcelona, as well as in numerous private collections. He died in Bilbao on June 5, 2001.
