Luxurious Colombian Emerald and Diamond Ring, c. 1980s

"Beauty will save the world," wrote Fyodor Dostoyevsky. On a smaller scale, this quote also applies to particularly beautiful gemstones. Even in ancient times, emeralds were said to have a healing effect on eyesight: the incomparable green is said to have a beneficial effect on the eyes. Emperor Nero is said to have watched gladiator fights through cut emeralds. And even today, our German word "Brille" is derived from this ancient tradition: It goes back to the word "beryl", the mineral group to which emerald also belongs. The emerald in this ring is definitely a real treat for the eyes. The radiant green gemstone comes from Colombia, which has always been the best source of precious emeralds. It is cabochon cut, which gives it a very unique character: The color of the stone is intense and bright, making the gemstone look like a precious candy, made of green light. The emerald is framed by 16 brilliant-cut diamonds. A total of 1.60 ct of very good quality diamonds shine around the emerald, setting it off in a very classic, effective way. The diamonds are set in white gold. The emerald, on the other hand, is held in place by yellow gold prongs. The ring band is also made from yellow gold. This combination of the two gold colors, white gold and yellow gold, comes from the classic jewelry tradition. As early as the turn of the century, white and warm metal colors were combined in this way to create the perfect setting for each gemstone. However, the cuts of the diamonds and the overall powerful appearance of the ring leave no doubt that the ring was created much later. It is a child of the 1980s, when impressive jewels were a true must have. The ring band is a special feature. It can be opened slightly using a clever mechanism. Not completely, so that you could lose the ring, but enough so that you can slip the ring over slightly wider joints. The ring band then clicks back into place and the ring fits perfectly.
