Jewellery from the 1980s and early 1990s fascinates as an often beautiful, yet always impressive testament to an era of optimism and excess: the oil crisis seemed to have been overcome, Wall Street was booming, and a new image of women emerged: confident and tough, asserting themselves in the workplace and among men, with broad shoulder pads and high heels. The fashion of this time demanded rings, necklaces, and brooches in previously unseen dimensions, featuring reflective surfaces of yellow gold and lavish adornments of gemstones. While a great deal of costume jewellery was produced, fine jewellery was also manufactured in large quantities across the United States and Europe. The bracelet presented here, dating to around 1985, bears witness to this era. A total of 128 diamonds, together with an equal number of natural rubies, adorn the slightly curved links of the design. The rubies are arranged in rows, held in place only by gold bars on the sides. This technically sophisticated setting method gives the impression that the stones are almost floating, seemingly held in place by invisible forces. The result is a dazzling surface, as the gemstones are cut in such a way that they appear to merge seamlessly together. The bracelet is made of high-carat gold, rhodium-plated in white around the diamond settings. It comes with a detailed appraisal by the German Association for Gemstone Evaluation Idar-Oberstein and we found it in Hamburg.
