Just like the currents of art, jewellery fashion always reflects what moves a society. Sometimes it is technical innovations, such as the introduction of electric light, which led to a fashion for sparkling diamond jewelry for the evening at the end of the 19th century. Sometimes, however, these themes are also of a substantive nature: In the 1960s, for example, jewellery came into fashion that seemed to be inspired by the space race, by the new space travel devices and the thought of distant galaxies that suddenly no longer seemed quite so unreachable. Cool white metals characterized this fashion, often arranged into abstract, narrow wires. One such piece was the "Cosmos" brooch, which won the Jewel of the Year award in 1967. Icy diamonds, midnight blue sapphires, the self-explanatory moonstones and also opals are found with preference in these pieces. This ring is a child of that era and is designed around a large, faceted blue sapphire. The midnight blue gemstone weighs about 2.45 ct and has only tiny inclusions under a magnifying glass, distinguishing it as a natural gemstone. Its surround is typical of the period: eight brilliant cut diamonds are set in claw settings all around. They are set with a slight spacing, creating a crystalline effect. At the same time, they are of fine white quality. High-karat white gold holds the gemstones. The ring is in very good condition. It is present, yet finely and solidly crafted in detail. An independent appraisal by DeGEB has confirmed the quality of the materials used.
