Very beautiful original engraving in the third state, with double numbering but before the excudit of Antonio Salamanca, depicting an episode from the myth of Cupid and Psyche, as told in Metamorphoses or The Golden Ass by Apuleius. A trimmed example to the framing, on heavy laid paper, in excellent condition (see photo). Plate no. 12 from a series of 32, of which 3 by Agostino Veneziano, on the "Tale of Cupid and Psyche", derived from drawings of Raphael-inspired style attributed by Vasari to the Flemish Michiel Coxie, whom the Master of the Dice is said to have met in Rome in 1532, the period to which the series is dated. The drawings reproduce the analogous frescoes in the Loggia of the Farnesina, destroyed in the Sack of Rome of 1527. Below the image is an inscription of four verses in two columns: "L'invidiose del gran ben.../...un serpe velenoso." The sisters of Psyche, envious of her immense wealth and of her mysterious and divine consort (Love/Eros), plot to deceive her and bring her ruin. Bartsch 39-70; Raphael Invenit pp. 250/257, 1/32.
