Magazine rack - 'Dagbladen' with two birds

Two birds among the berries, line after line in brass driven, above the inscription Dagbladen. A Dutch newspaper hanger from the Nieuwe Kunst: an oak board with a vaulted head, the brass plate at the bottom turned into a lip. The floral edge runs over that lip. The newspaper hangs between, every morning in the same spot in the hallway. Prefer not to wait? This piece is also directly for sale via Nu kopen. Description: The board is quarter-sawn oak: on the back the mirrors gleam in the wood, the expensive sawn work that cabinetmakers kept for visible work. The upper edge is vaulted, the sides are cut into a light waist, the lower edge springs back. The brass plate bears a continuous border of flowers, leaves and berries, also on the lip. In the center a banderole with Dagbladen in capitals with a curling D. Above it two birds on a branch full of berry clusters, left a curly leaf, right flowering twigs. Three brass mortise screws hold the plate; on the rear there are two hanging eyes. About the maker: The Dutch courantenhanger appears in newspaper advertisements from 1894 and remained a staple shop item until the fifties. This specimen belongs to the generation in oak and etched brass, with the natural ornament of the Nieuwe Kunst. In the interior: In a narrow hallway next to the coat rack, where the morning light falls on the brass, the first glimpse of the day. Follow DECADERS Gallery via the heart next to my name above: every week new Jugendstil-metal and antiques pieces, you see them first. ——— Condition: Good. Brass: scratches and patina spots in the flat, light soiling in the etched grounds; plate and lip straight. Oak: wear and small dents on the edges; the untreated back bears white lime splashes. Hanging eyes: two, of different metal. All three screws present. No breaks, no restorations. See the images. At a glance: Material: oak wood and etched brass plate, three brass screws Dimensions and weight: h 26 x w 25 x d 3 cm, 600 g Brand: without factory mark; inscription 'Dagbladen'; attributed by form and decoration, see Description and sources Dating: ca. 1900–1920 Origin: private collection, Netherlands Description and sources: Dutch copperware production from the Nieuwe Kunst, Dutch Art Nouveau, circa 1900 to 1920. The inscription is Dutch; the curling D and the naturalistic floral edge belong to that movement, not the sleek Art Deco of after 1920. The mortise screws fit that dating. The type appears as a newspaper hanger in the Dutch press from 1894, consultable via Delpher. Shipping: Professionally packed in a sturdy box with cushioning material, for fragile objects a double box. Always shipped insured with Track and Trace.
