Magnificent "Retro Style" Bracelet with Diamonds in Platinum from

This bracelet sparkles like a starry sky on a balmy summer night, for it is made of nothing but diamonds set in platinum. Approximately 12.70 carats of diamonds are set closely together here, like the stones in a mosaic. They form a magnificent geometric pattern that flows gracefully around the wrist. In the center is a larger diamond of approximately 0.55 ct in a transitional cut—that is, the brilliant cut style common in the mid-20th century. On the right and left, baguette-cut diamonds form two triangles, and beneath the diamonds are horizontal bands of additional transition-cut diamonds. The result resembles a buckle on a fabric ribbon, which in turn is formed from additional transition-cut and baguette-cut diamonds. Buckles and clasps were a popular motif in the late Art Deco period from the 1930s through the 1950s. A famous example is Marlene Dietrich’s legendary ruby bracelet (see here) from 1937, made of platinum with diamonds and rubies; numerous other designs can be found in David Bennet and Daniela Mascetti: Understanding Jewellery, Woodbridge 2010, p. 392 ff. In the 1940s, however, yellow gold dominated jewelers’ displays, as platinum was no longer available due to the war. Our platinum bracelet was therefore likely created somewhat later, once peace had returned, around 1950. Measuring 18.0 cm in length, the bracelet can be worn a bit more loosely. The design accommodates the bracelet twisting on the wrist—in fact, it is designed to do so. Indeed, during the period when it was made, it was common to wear several bracelets side by side, allowing them to overlap to create a particularly luxurious look. We discovered the bracelet in Switzerland. Its hallmarks confirm that it was made in Paris. An independent appraisal of the diamonds’ quality is included with the bracelet.
