Makonde Njorowe Body Mask with Attached Face Mask and Ritual Bundle

Makonde Njorowe Body Mask with Attached Face Mask and Ritual Bundle

East Africa, Tanzania, Makonde peoples. A full-body Makonde mask of the njorowe type, carved in one piece as the swollen torso of a pregnant woman and, unusually, joined directly to its own feminine face mask rather than worn with a separate one. The heavy-lidded face carries a broad flaring nose, thick everted lips, and pierced ears hung with improvised rings of cloth, aluminum, and a small coin; tufts of human hair crown the head. Rope, fiber cord, and glass trade beads secure a stitched bundle to the chest, its form irregular and darkened, perhaps once holding charms, herbs, or personal materials tied to protection, fertility, or healing. Incised bands radiate across the belly, echoing the navel markings the Makonde consider a defense against malevolent spirits. Encrusted mud pigment covers the whole. The njorowe body mask belongs to the Makonde mapiko initiation complex of southeastern Tanzania and northern Mozambique. Boys withdraw from the village for months of seclusion, undergoing circumcision and instruction in adult conduct, marriage, song, dance, and practical craft. Their return is marked with masquerade, in which a male dancer dons a body mask of this kind together with a feminine face mask, appearing as a young pregnant woman. Paired with a male masked figure, the performers pantomime intercourse, the weight of pregnancy, and the ordeal of childbirth, instructing both sexes in the obligations of marriage and parenthood. The incised patterning across the abdomen translates a body practice into wood. Cuts made in the skin were rubbed with vegetable carbon and then castor oil, healing to a blue-black that sits between scarification and tattoo. Abdominal designs clustered near the navel were held to repel evil spirits; comparable facial markings, once widespread among the Makonde, are now rarely seen. Item # 203671
