Phenomenal Proof of Record MALAYA. 20 Cents, 1943. London or Iver Heath Mint. George VI. NGC PROOF-64. KM-5A; SS-8B; cf. Prid-2 (Business strike). The Proof nature of the strike is immediately evident, with handsome luminous reflectivity, and crisp well struck details. Proofs of record such as this example are amongst the most difficult coins to acquire in the British Malaya series, meaning this example will have no shortage of active participants seeking a chance to add it to their holdings. On first glance, the issue of 1943 Malaya coinage of any kind seems odd, as the entirety of British Malaya was occupied by the Japanese between 1942-45. Regardless, the British sought a smooth transition from Japanese Military Occupation back to British Civil Administration, and a coining was undertaken in 1943 and 1944 for eventual use when Japan withdrew, stockpiling them until that time. Given the eventual debasement of Malaya coinage to Copper-Nickel in 1948, this preparation was somewhat mooted. Estimate: $10,000 - $15,000. Click here for certification details from NGC.
