Robert MALERNE Clarinette Very beautiful B-flat clarinet, “Artist 3 stars” series, for advanced clarinetists, stamped Robert MALERNE at LA COUTURE-BOUSSEY. A collector’s item. It is engraved " RM R. MALERNE PARIS Artist" with three stars on all parts of the instrument, logo written in handsome Gothic script. Its serial number is 00339 etched on the body of the upper and lower joints, dating its production to around 1960. The body of this clarinet is polished grenadilla (rosewood) of impeccable quality with no defects or signs of previous repairs. The bore is brilliant. The construction is very meticulous with a tenon binding on both joints of the upper body and a nickel-silver lining on the upper tenon of the lower body. The keys, brilliant, are silvered with no trace of wear. In B-flat, Boehm system, 6 rings, 17 keys, its bore diameter is 14.60 mm; it is tuned to A = 442 Hz. It has been completely overhauled, including: - Dismantling, cleaning and purging, including bore and chimneys. - Oiling with abrasin oil of the body (interior and exterior), the barrel and the bell. - Bright polishing of the keys. - Replacement of the tenon and key dampers. - Provision and fitting of white leather pads by "Martin Chanu". Only the twelfth key is equipped with a leather pad. - Reassembly, adjustment and leak testing. With its Vandoren 5RV mouthpiece, it has a superb sound and plays easily and accurately across the entire range. It has a velvety tone, well centered; its timbre is warm with excellent projection. If jazz-equipped, it is powerful with great projection. The clarinet is delivered in its original fine (so-called “soap bubble”) case. Inside you will find an excellent Malerne mouthpiece with its ligature and cap, a swab, a small pot of grease, as well as a lyre with its bushing and a small screwdriver. This mouthpiece, with a large opening, suitable for jazz, is fitted with a Vandoren reed of strength 1. I also include a second complete Vandoren 5RV mouthpiece, fitted with a Vandoren reed of 2.5 for more classical use. Regarding the Malerne mouthpiece, here is what Jack Kissinger, American professional clarinetist, says: "If you search the archives for 'Drucker and Malerne' clarinets, you’ll find that Stanley Drucker had a large stock of Malerne mouthpieces that he regarded as of great quality. If you have an old Malerne mouthpiece, you’ll benefit from cleaning, sterilizing and putting it back into service." Note: Robert MALERNE clarinets were manufactured in France for decades and are often overlooked despite their high quality! This is not a beginner instrument; it is a professional clarinet known for its tonal richness, lively response, and especially careful construction. Many musicians regard these instruments as the best-kept secret of vintage clarinets. It is truly a superb clarinet!
