MANNER OF PIERRE PUGET SHIPPING OFF THE COAST IN A TEMPEST Oil on canvas 33 x 82cm (12 x 32¼in.) Provenance: Sale, Sotheby's, Northamptonshire, Barnwell Manor, 28, 29 & 30 May 2002, lot 1022 (as Attributed to Pierre Puget, unsold) Sale, Dreweatts, Newbury, Windsor House Antiques: The End of an Era, 25 & 26 April 2023, lot 204 It has been suggested that the present lot may represent the remnants of the Spanish Armada which were forced to sail around the British Isles after their defeat by Drake and his men. It is well recorded that they encountered terrible weather on their journey home, many were wrecked and only a few managed to finally get back to Spain. Interestingly, the Latin motto on the Elizabethan medallion commemorating the defeat of the Armada famously translated as “God blew and they were scattered”. With thanks to Michael Naxton for his assistance with cataloguing this lot.
