Art Nouveau mantel clock from Cristallerie de Saint-Louis – Model 1076 – 1908 Catalogue – Frosted glass and gilding • Manufacturer: Cristallerie de Saint-Louis • Model: 1076 (listed in the 1908 catalogue, Plate 58) • Material: Frosted pressed glass with swirling motif, gilded in gold • Style: Art Nouveau • Era: Around 1908 • Origin: France • Dimensions: H. 22 cm × W. 12.5 cm × D. 9.5 cm • Movement: Mechanical, in perfect working order • Provenance: Original shop label from the Bordeaux store Bergeron Le Curino – Vve Le Coader & Fils "Only one identical clock is available for sale with a major English dealer, who unjustly attributed it to the Manufacture de Montjoye, and the asking price is 4,800 pounds sterling." Description Very elegant Art Nouveau mantel clock from the prestigious Cristallerie de Saint-Louis, model 1076 listed in the 1908 catalogue. Manufactured in frosted glass with swirling patterns, it is adorned with a delicate relief decoration of garlands of roses and foliage gilded in gold, typical of Saint-Louis productions of this period. The white enamel dial, surrounded by brass, is original. The mechanical movement works perfectly and keeps accurate time. Under the base remains the original label from the Bordeaux shop Bergeron Le Curino – Vve Le Coader & Fils, Porcelaines & Cristaux, 4 & 6 Rue des Lauriers in Bordeaux, testament to its diffusion in luxury trade in the early 20th century. Documented piece of very high quality, both decorative and perfectly functional. The Cristallerie de Saint-Louis Founded in 1586 in the Northern Vosges, the Cristallerie de Saint-Louis is one of the oldest and most prestigious French crystal and art glass manufacturers. Under Louis XV, it earned the title of “Manufacture Royale.” At the turn of the 20th century, it produced highly refined Art Nouveau pieces, blending techniques of pressed glass, frosted glass, and gold gilding. The model 1076 shown here appears in the 1908 catalogue (Plate 58 – Miscellaneous Articles: Clocks, vases and candy boxes). Condition Very good overall condition. Gilding well preserved with light and harmonious wear from use. I note more substantial losses of gilding at the base of the clock. Nevertheless, the overall appearance is very harmonious. Glass without chips or cracks. Movement in perfect working order. Original label present.
