His painting combines elements of Cubism, as seen in Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, with the expressive colors of Fauvism, inspired by artists such as Henri Matisse and André Derain. Chagall was closely connected with the Parisian avant-garde and maintained contacts with Amedeo Modigliani and Fernand Léger. The influence of Odilon Redon's symbolism is evident in Chagall's use of metaphorical imagery, while the dreamlike, surreal scenes in his paintings recall works by Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí. His Jewish heritage and the traditions of his homeland Vitebsk strongly shaped his visual language and also led to a collaboration with El Lissitzky during the Russian avant-garde period. In later years, Chagall influenced the École de Paris artists, including Chaim Soutine and Moïse Kisling. The poetic lightness of his compositions shows parallels to the work of Paul Klee, while his stained glass windows and stage designs resemble Sonia Delaunay's decorative designs. With his unique blend of fantasy, symbolism, and emotional depth, Marc Chagall created a visual world that makes him unmistakable.
