All auctions / Miscellaneous / Mariano Montoya (1950) - Gallos y Gallinas
Artist: Mariano Montoya (Ciudad Real) Technique: Oil on canvas Signature: Signed in the lower right corner Era / Period: Second half of the 20th century (c. 1980–1990) Style: Realism (with a 19th-century costumbrista root) Theme: Costumbrismo / Genre scene / Urban landscape and traditional architecture Framing: Classic carved wooden frame with a carved moulding and a gilded/bronze patina finish. Description of the work: Attractive and luminous oil painting with a costumbrista character representing the interior of a courtyard paved with traditional Mediterranean or Andalusian architecture. In the middle plane, beside a whitewashed arch and a large clay jar with vegetation, a female figure dressed in popular attire holds a container while feeding the poultry. In the foreground, the focus falls on a dynamic group of roosters and hens meticulously detailed on the pavement of tiles and stone. The composition stands out for its accomplished architectural perspective, the play of light and shadow on the rough facades and whitewashed walls, and the rich tonal range of the plumage in contrast with the earthy and ochre tones of the surroundings. A piece of notable scenographic presence and serene atmosphere, representative of the author's costumbrista vein. Overall dimensions: 122x94 Painting dimensions: 100x73 Biography and artistic career: Mariano Montoya was born in 1950 in Tomelloso (Ciudad Real), a land with a notable artistic tradition. Mostly self-taught, he stood out from the outset for innate technical virtuosity, a clean brushstroke, and an extraordinary ability for drawing and academic composition. Throughout his career he has adeptly cultivated figurative painting, excelling especially in orientalism, 18th-century gallant scenes, traditional costumbrismo, and figures of majas and carnival scenes. Reserved in character and distant from mass commercial self-promotion circuits, Montoya focused his career on workshop rigor and selective production. His paintings are common and highly valued in the secondary market and in Spanish and international auction houses (such as Durán, Subastas Segre, Aletheia or Templum Fine Art), where his large oriental scenes and period scenes achieve notable recognition for their decorative value and refined technical quality.
