Marie Alphonse Mucha - “Affiche pour Gismonda, 1895”.

Marie Alphonse Mucha: Title: “Affiche pour Gismonda, 1895”. Color offset lithography, published in 1997 by Taschen. Condition: the work is in very good condition. Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) is one of the undisputed masters of Art Nouveau and a fundamental figure in the history of decorative modern art. His instantly recognizable style, characterized by elegant female figures, flowing lines, ornamental halos, and rich botanical motifs, has become synonymous with fin-de-siècle Paris and the rise of graphic art as a collected discipline. Mucha's works enjoy enduring international demand, with high prices for posters, lithographs, and decorative panels, appealing just as much to fine-art enthusiasts, design fans, and interior stylists. This first commission for the celebrated actress Sarah Bernhardt and her “Théâtre de la Renaissance” established Alfons Mucha’s reputation as one of the leading representatives of Art Nouveau and a master of decorative prints. The poster, innovative in form and artistic conception, caused a great deal of excitement. The dominant subject of the almost life-size image of the actress in her role as “Gismonda” captivated the public with its noble form and rich colors. The work was inspired by the ceremonial procession in the final act of Victorien Sardou's play. The melodramatic pose, the magnificent dress reminiscent of liturgical vestments, the symbolic palm leaf, and the suggestion of a halo evoke medieval or Neo-Gothic style. The background, based on Byzantine models and built like a mosaic, contributes to the sacred atmosphere, an aura that not least reflects the almost cult-like devotion that Sarah Bernhardt as the Belle Époque muse and her elevation to a kind of secular saint fell to. The success of the film earned Mucha an exclusive contract with the actress, lasting six years and coinciding with the flourishing of Art Nouveau. With the posters that emerged from this collaboration, he laid the groundwork for the development of his unmistakable 'Mucha Style'. From a market and collecting perspective, Mucha stands alongside other highly sought-after names in modern and decorative art, such as Gustav Klimt, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Egon Schiele, and Aubrey Beardsley, while also resonating with collectors of broader modern and contemporary icons such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Keith Haring, Banksy, and Jeff Koons. His work frequently appears in searches related to Art Nouveau interiors, vintage posters, luxurious decoration, Belle Époque aesthetics, design history, and collectible prints.
